Signature Programs

Oak Hill Supportive Living Community promotes joyous, healthy living from the inside out. Built using green building materials and practices, Oak Hill became the country’s first assisted living community to earn “Gold” certification from the National Association of Home Builders.

On the Move and On the Go!

Ongoing popular activities like ArtPath, Good Vibrations drumming circles, yoga, laugher yoga and chair chi keep residents exploring new endeavors. Residents get to explore outside of the community too on regular outings and trips. Among the favorites are the Botanical Gardens, Museum of Science and Industry, Jelly Belly Factory, Lake County Discovery Museum, the Kenosha Civil War Museum and Round Lake High School to see “A Christmas Carol.” Every Tuesday morning, the Oak Hill bus takes residents to the YWCA of Lake County for free computer classes.

Residents Make Oak Hill Special

Shining their light here and on the greater community

Full of personality and talent, residents make Oak Hill a special place to live. Thanks to volunteers, there is a resident-run store onsite that sells snacks and various sundries. Those who don’t drive especially appreciate the convenience of shopping without leaving the building. Believe it or not, resident couples can even renew their wedding vows right here at Oak Hill with the help of a resident who is a retired minister.

Oak Hill residents also shine their light on the greater community. They collect non-perishable food items for the local Avon Township food pantry. Using Oak Hill’s bus, they deliver the food in person. Some participate in a reading program with local kindergartners, visiting children’s classes to share stories. After Hurricane Sandy, residents organized a pet food and toy drive for affected animals that received coverage in the local newspaper.

Green Living is Good Living

Walking paths and raised gardens promote active living

Environmentally-friendly features like outdoor walking paths, a greenhouse and Victory gardens, promote a healthy lifestyle.

In summer, Oak Hill’s outdoor gardening club plants and cares for a variety of fruits and vegetables. They’ve grown red, green, and jalapeno peppers, eggplant, squash, zucchini, watermelon, and tomatoes. Raised planters on the patio make gardening easier for those who can’t bend over so easily. Residents keep plants and flowers blooming year round in the greenhouse, where visitors can enjoy colorful blooms and spring-like temperatures in the dead of winter.

Walking club members enjoy the native prairie scenery along Oak Hill’s walking paths, where many are aiming to cover 167 miles this year as part of the state’s Walk Across Illinois Challenge. Oak Hill’s patio outdoor space with tables, chairs and a built-in fire pit provides the perfect space for residents to relax and socialize. Here they occasionally roast marshmallows or host drumming circles around the fire pit.

Fun and Leisure!

Cooking classes, dances, theater and billiards

Moving indoors, there’s even more amenities for fun and leisure. Oak Hill has a billiards room with dart boards as well as a theater perfect for viewing movies and sporting events. One of the most popular programs at Oak Hill is “Cooking with Robert.” The community’s bus driver and chef extraordinaire, Robert, hosts cooking classes for residents. Most recipes that he demonstrates, such as microwave coffee cake and bread pudding, can easily be made in residents’ apartment kitchens. Crowds also show up for Oak Hill’s monthly dances, which featuring punch, snacks and a live DJ, who keeps the dance floor full.
